Over the past three decades, the number and scale of new copper discoveries has steadily declined. Data from S&P Global Commodity Insights shows that while the late 1990s and early 2000s saw a surge in major finds, the past few years have experienced a noticeable slowdown in new discoveries.

This trend is driven by several factors. Most high-grade, easily accessible deposits have already been exploited. Exploration budgets remain constrained, with companies increasingly prioritising the extension of existing mines over the discovery of new deposits. At the same time, rising costs, stricter regulatory requirements, and longer development timelines present additional challenges to bringing new resources into production.

Global demand for copper continues to grow, driven by renewable energy, electric vehicles and infrastructure development. Culpeo Minerals is supporting this effort through our Lana Corina and Fortuna projects in Chile. These highly prospective projects are designed to contribute to the discovery and development of copper resources required for a sustainable and electrified future
